Dear Parents and Guardians,
This letter is to inform you that a second individual at Lucerne Elementary School has tested positive for COVID-19. It is for this reason that we have made the decision to close the school. Over the course of the next few days we will be working with the Lake County Public Health Department to contact trace. Individuals identified as a close contact will be notified through the Public Health. I understand that it can be disconcerting to not have specific information surrounding the individual; however, it is important that we respect the privacy of our students and staff. At the same time, we want to provide you with as much information possible.
A close contact in terms of contact tracing means an individual that has been within 6 feet of the infected individual for 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period. An individual that has been identified as a close contact will need to quarantine for 14 days from their last exposure. As previously stated we will be working closely with Lake County Public Health to identify and contact possible close contacts as quickly as possible.
If your student(s) start to experience COVID-19 symptoms please contact your doctor as soon as possible. Symptoms can include fever, cough and shortness of breath and can appear 2-14 days from exposure. If you have any questions about COVID-19 symptoms you can also contact Public Health at (707) 263-1090.
At this time staff will not be allowed to return to school until the school has been properly disinfected and contact tracing is complete. Once staff can return then the process of supplying learning materials to students for distance learning will begin. This will be a process and we will be updating everyone as soon as we can. The Distance Learning Program will follow the In-person Program and will remain closed until contact tracing and campus sanitization is complete.

Queridos padres y guardianes,
Maintaining Social Distance during morning drop-off
Our staggered start and dismissal schedule is in place to limit the number of students that are on campus at any given time. We are experiencing an increased number of students in the 4th-8th grade that are arriving too early for the health screening. We realize that there are families who have students in the primary and upper grades. We advise those families to bring all of their students to school from 8:20-8:25 a.m. *A student in the primary grades will not be marked tardy if they arrive at 8:25 a.m.
Thanks for supporting our efforts to keep students and staff at our school healthy and safe.

Dear Parents,
The County of Lake has just moved back into the purple tier, the highest rating of the state’s COVID ranking. More restrictions on businesses will be seen in the county until we can move back into red on the scale. According to the state guidelines, Lucerne Elementary can stay open to in person learning. I would like to thank you all for entrusting us with the education of your children. The safety of students and staff continues to be of the utmost importance. We have instituted several measures to limit the exposure of the virus. These measures would include regular COVID 19 testing for staff, an increase of custodial hours to enhance the existing disinfection schedules, the closure of in person learning cohorts to students new to our district and clear closure criteria as detailed below.
Please be aware, that even though we are currently open, things could change quickly requiring us to partially or fully close. If a student was to test positive and had been on campus, their cohort would close immediately for at least 14 calendar days. Furthermore, if more than 5% of the school population tested positive the entire school campus would shut down for at least 14 days or longer as determined by the Lake County Public health officer. Prior planning for all is an important step in these uncertain times. We hope that neither one of these scenarios play out. We hope to all stay healthy through the remainder of the school year. Now more than ever it is important for sick students and staff to stay home. Together with all of us practicing social distancing, masking, hand washing and proper disinfection we will limit the chance of school closing. Thank you for your continued efforts.
Sincerely,
Mike Brown
Principal/Superintendent
It is a point of pride at Lucerne Elementary School that we have been able to offer two instructional models to families this school year. Our Distance Learning and In-person programs have offered a robust learning environment for our students. As we near the completion of another quarter there is an opportunity for families to change the instructional model that they would like their students to be enrolled in. If you are interested in changing programs you need to talk to your student’s teacher or call the office by 12/4/20. Once, we have this information we can start to plan and prepare for students to transition.
It is important to note that requesting a transition does not mean we will be able to accommodate the request. Due to the health and safety requirements outlined by the state we have a limited number of students that can be within a classroom and in the cafeteria. Priority placement will be given to English Learners, Homeless students, Foster Youth, and students with exceptional needs. Families will be informed if their request has been granted by December 11th. Students will start in their new program on January 4th, 2021.

Some of the symptoms of flu and COVID-19 are similar, making it difficult to tell the difference between them.
